Así es, pues este cantante, pianista y compositor nacido en New Orleans en 1928, es heredero del jazz (varios miembros de su familia tocaban en bandas locales a principios de siglo), también heredero del boogie-woogie (una variación de los blues), y uno de los "padres" del rythm and blues y del rock and roll. Sus influencias han llegado incluso al ska jamaicano.
